Fishfinders
How Does a Fishfinder Work
A fish finder is a fathometer that uses an active sonar for detecting fish on the bottom of the lake or ocean and displaying the fish image on a display device. The sonar technology was developed during the Second World War; the device produces a sound wave, sending it through water. The wave sent starts narrow and then spreads as it goes through the water forming a cone. When the wave hits a fish it is reflected to the fish finder sensor and the time it takes for the sound to reach the fish is calculated. Using the velocity of the wave, the distance between the fish and the boat is calculated. If the wave does not bounce back, after hitting a fish it hits the bottom where the wave is absorbed. If the wave hits a rock on the surface it is reflected strongly to the finder, and it is reflected on the display.
The cone shaped angle formed by the signal sent through the water differs according to the wave beam. This cone is measured at ‘-10db’; this method ensures measurement consistency and fish finder capability. The cone angle differs with the fishfinder manufacturer and model; some fishfinders have one sonar beam and others are multi-beam. Multi-beamed sonar fishfinders send more than beam to cover a wider area accurately than the mono-beamed sonar fishfinders.
Fishfinder Components
A fish finder has the following components:
1. Display- the display is made clearer by the different pixels on the screen, the screen used shows an image of fish, and the calculated distance of the fishes, and if there are many fishes in the water. The display can be an LCD and CRT sceen.
2. Transducer- are electrical devices that convert energy from one form to another. Most transducers are portable, so depending on the size of your boat and the area you want to cover, ensure that you get a transducer that fits your needs.
3. Batteries- fish finders have batteries; these batteries have a different charge carrying capacity. Always get a long-lasting battery.
Fishfinder Manufacturers
There are many brands of fish finders available on the market. These brands include Garmin, Furuno, Eagle, Hummingbird, and Lowrance. There are GPS, chart plotters, transducer and many other models. These devices can be mounted anywhere from the boat, arm or the fishing rod, and regardless of where they are placed give you an accurate reading.
Hummingbird fishfinders have many models on the market; there are of two types of models – combo hummingbird GPS fishfinders and portable fishfinders. All Hummingbird models come with a transducer that is standard and mounted. Optional transducers are also provided by Hummingbird like the puck and angle puck transducers. Portable, troy motor and thru-hull transducers. Hummingbird matrix model has a GPS which helps find and mark the hotspots. With additional applications like weather barometer sensor, the fish finder shows you what the fish is feeling thus ensuring that you will change your fishing tactics. Hummingbird has a wireless remote to spot a fish 100 feet down and around the boat.
Lowrance company produces the Eagle fish finders which have all the features a fish finder needs but at a cheaper price. This brand is good and its GPS and Eagle fish finders come in many models. Hummingbird matrix model has a GPS which helps find and mark the hotspots. With additional applications like weather barometer sensor, the fish finder shows you what the fish is feeling thus ensuring that you will change your fishing tactics.
Piranhamax has the latest display technology with the best resolution and grayscale, it has more features like a depth alarm, fish alarm, Piranhamax water temperature. The 100 series model has a brilliant color display with single beam sonar. 300 series model is for bigger boats and has a monochrome display with many features that make fishing fun. The one with the 640 vertical mega pixels is the 500 series and differs from the others because of its resolution power.
Garmin International has produced products which are used in automotive, wireless, marine, aviation and general use. The Garmin fish finder is of high quality, safety and low affordable prices. Garmin has produced a complete kit which comes with transducer which is transom mounted and has temperature and depth capabilities.
Furuno fish finders are designed for all boats with power ranging from 300-3000 watts.
Benefits of Fishfinders
A Fishfinder is advantageous to fishermen because it helps to ensure you will find some fish where your are fishing. The device allows an individual to know where to fish and catch fish, this way making fishing easier. Currently finding a fishfinder is easy. They are accurate, easy to use and relatively cheap.
